Tenerife - A Value For Money Holiday Destination

Tenerife - A Value For Money Holiday Destination by Trevor Dace

Tumultuous Tenerife. One of the most exciting holiday destinations in the world . Over ten million visitors go to Tenerife each summer and return time and time again for what promises to be a great trip that doesn't cost a fortune.

Found just off the coast of North Africa, it is one of seven volcanic Islands that together comprise the Canary Islands. Out of all of them, Tenerife enjoys a bigger chunk of the tourism pie.

Born from a volcano, Tenerife was created as a result of several eruptions. These eruptions happened about 3.5 million years ago and there has been no such activity since, although there was a recent earthquake measuring a Richter scale of 4 in the year 2002.

Tenerife is split into two very distinctive geographical regions. In the northern territories it is very fertile and green with high humidity and rainfall whilst to the south it is much drier and sunnier.

Most of the holiday destinations are centred in the south of the island in the region of Costa Adeje. This is where the popular and ever growing Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas resorts are situated. In the north, the town of Puerto de la Cruz is fast becoming a popular holiday resort too. Here however, a considerable amount of thought has gone into keeping the wonderful ambience of the town and it is a dream venue for a peaceful and more relaxing break.

Originally, up until the invasion of the Spaniards in the fifteenth century, the inhabitants of the island were the simple native peoples known as the Guanches. ‘Tenerife’ translates from the Guanches language for ‘white mountain’.

Down in the heavily developed south can be found the popular resort of Los Cristianos. One mile away from its noisy neighbour, Playa de las Americas, the bay of Los Cristianos provides a joyous and fun-filled escape for the whole family.

It's hardly believable that it wasn’t so long ago when Los Cristianos was merely a delightful fishing harbour. The Tenerife of today is unrecognisable from the quiet unassuming island of 40 years ago.

Although a lot has changed, it is fortunate that a great deal of Los Cristianos' charm is still in evidence. As you wander through the more ancient parts of town you will notice the Canarian buildings provide a striking contrast to the modern hotel developments. All this lives happily together with undoubtedly one of the liveliest holiday resorts you can experience anywhere on this earth. There are two superb bathing beaches, Las Vistas and Playa de Los Cristianos which offer plenty of water sports fun as well as refreshment and accessibility. Don’t forget the black sand nudist beach of Rincon for that all over sun tan.

Playas de Las Americas is where to go if you're looking for a lively holiday, packed with energy and adrenalin sports. It's almost impossible to comprehend that all the white sand you see before you was imported from the Sahara Desert and that this complete resort has sprung up to answer the call of a growing number of young holidaymakers. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation, you might well be more relaxed at Los Cristianos or any of the resorts along the island's west coast.

In the south, there is no shortage of things to do, including the totally entertaining day of performing dolphins together with a host of water games on offer at Aqua Land.

Why not consider scaling Tenerife’s extinct volcano, Mount Teide? Don’t fret, the volcano is definitely extinct and you can get to the top with the help of a cable car. Mt. Teide offers a great way to enjoy the island and beyond for the panoramic views of  La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria are stunning.

Throughout the years the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has served as a major port in the Atlantic, a role that it continues to satisfy today. Being the capital city as well as the largest city on the island, things are more civilised here. The variety of clubs and bars here is excellent with an extensive choice of restaurants offering cuisine from around the world. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is especially exciting throughout the month of February when it hosts to the world renowned Tenerife Carnival.
